How Habitat Works

The Habitat for Humanity Idea

Since 1976 Habitat for Humanity International has sought to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world. To this end, Habitat for Humanity has built and rehabilitated more than 280,000 homes throughout the world.

Manifesting That Idea Locally

The mission of Habitat for Humanity is carried out at the local level by independent affiliates. West Tallahatchie Habitat for Humanity utilizes volunteer labor, with donations of money and materials, to build safe, decent, affordable homes together in partnership with low income yet hardworking families.

Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. To be accepted for homeownership, families must have need of adequate shelter; demonstrate a reliable ability to pay their no-interest mortgage, insurances, and taxes; and be willing to partner by puttin 500 sweat equity hours into the construction of their home as well as other Habitat homes.

Since its inception in 1984, West Tallahatchie Habitat for Humanity has provided quality, affordable homes to 39 such families in Tallahatchie County. The homes are sold to these partner families at no-profit, and financed with affordable, no-interest loans. We use the homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments to help build more Habitat homes.

In the pursuit of that objective, West Tallahatchie Habitat for Humanity has developed a consistent roster of annually returning volunteer groups from around the nation and other parts of the world, and has partnered with local churches, schools, businesses, and individuals in the Tallahatchie Community.
