The documents we require are to provide proof of homeownership, fulltime residence, and household income. You will need to submit the following documents with your application:

• Copy of your most recent property tax statement
• Copy of your most recent mortgage statement
• Proof of current homeowner’s insurance policy
• One of your most recent utility bills: gas, power, or water
• For all household members over eighteen (18),
  • Copy of current driver’s license or government issued ID
  • Copy of your most recent federal tax return
  • If you are currently employed: pay stubs for the previous two (2) consecutive months
  • If you are self-employed: Form 1040 with Schedule C, E or F and a year-to-date profit and loss statement
  • If applicable: monthly benefit statements, ex: retirement, pension, unemployment, SSI, TANF, SSDI, child support, alimony, etc.
  • Copy of the two (2) most recent statements for all bank accounts – checking, savings, investment, retirement. NOTE: Statement must include the institution name & address, account holder name & address, account number, and activity period.

Household size is determined by the number of people (children and adults) who have been living in the home for at least a full year, and plan to live in the home fulltime for at least another year. All adult household members will need to provide identification and income verification.

Each year both the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the State of California provide estimates of median income for each county in California. To be income eligible for our program, your household must make at or below 80% of the area median income for your household size.

If you are currently unemployed, you must be experiencing “long-term” unemployment of at least six (6) months before you are eligible to qualify for our program

Your annual income will be a combination of your current gross income and assets. You can most easily find your annual income on past tax returns, pay stubs, or benefit letters. Assets are items of value that may be turned into cash. This includes savings and checking accounts.

• Homes within our service area.
• Property must be owner-occupied and the primary residence for all owners on title.
• Property must be Single Family Residence, manufactured home, condominium, townhouse, or duplex. Multifamily dwellings larger than two units (apartment buildings, triplex, etc.), homes used as income property or rental units, boats, and recreational vehicles (RVs) are not eligible.
• Property must be fit to live in. Repairs requiring a permit cannot be completed on homes with unpermitted or illegal additions.
• Applicants who own multiple real estate properties are not eligible.

It usually takes 2 – 4 weeks to process an application. The exactly processing time depends on the volume of applications we receive and if all the necessary documents are submitted with the application. We will contact all applicants on the status of their application every month.

Sweat equity is the volunteer time participants invest in their home repair project. As part of our partnership agreement, homeowners (or a family / friend representative) must provide 8 hours of sweat equity working with us. Not all sweat equity is physical labor and we can accommodate all ages, abilities, and skill levels. Options for sweat equity include doing clerical work at the Habitat office, participating in Habitat special events or fundraising activities, preparing food for workers, outreach activities, and other methods discussed based on a case by case basis.
